Founders – Doom Bourbon Barrel IIPA

Founders – Doom Bourbon Barrel IIPA, 2017, 12.4%ABV, 355ml bottle.

Notes: – Founders Barrel Aged/Backstage Series # 6: Doom Imperial IPA

Drank on 13/12/2017, from I.B.S.

Appearance: 2.5 – Slightly translucent orange sunset, nice head with slight lacing.

Smell/Aroma: 2.5 – Mango, fruity, slightly malty.

Taste: 3 – Like a moderate IPA with a fruity hop character,  has that malt sweetness. then a hop hit to the front of the tongue. Then you get this bitterness at the back and, OK 12% theres the slight alcohol. So well hidden, scary. Its big but in stages.Gets more sweet malts as you sip and it warms.

Mouthfeel/Palate: 2.5 – Its all over with the bitterness. None of it bad.

Over all: 3.5 – This is kinda good, its bourbon barrel aged and an Imperial IPA, its heaps hoppy but its balanced with the hot alcohol and the sweet malts that cover that. This is stupid big, but drinkable.

New Belgium – Fat Tire Amber Ale

New Belgium – Fat Tire Amber Ale, 2017, 5.2%ABV, 355ml can.

Drank on 8/12/2017, from I.B.S.

Smell/Aroma: 3.5 – Bready lovely wholemeal malts, all malts, no hoppy smells, no yeastyness.

Taste: 3.5 – Malty, almost rich, bready, a light good balanced bitterness. A slight sweetness initially, A slight alcohol warmth that just sits well with the malt, Nothing overbearing. There is a hop bitterness but it is light balanced and purely bittering hops, sits on the back of the tongue.

Mouthfeel/Palate: 3 – Soft, nice, not cloying or bitter. Nice carbonation.

Overall: 3.5  – This is great, its lighter on the malt than something like an Anchor or Kona Brewing beer (which I usually find are very malt forward, and excellent), but its still malt dominant and balanced and really good.

Taste: 2 – Hop bitterness is the main thing, slight bready malt, wheaty maybe slightly yeasty, a bit steely/minerally after..

Mouthfeel/Palate: 2 – Minerally, a tight bitter fizz, probably because this is was canned yesterday.

Black Brewing – XXXPA Imperial IPA

Black Brewing – XXXPA Imperial IPA, 2017, 9.8%, 330ml bottle.

Drank on 3/12/2017, from Bottle-O, Vic Park.

Appearance: 2.5 – Orange amber, clear, nice white head on pouring, not much carbonation.

Smell/Aroma: 3 – Sweet malts, passionfruit, mango, pineapple. Denali hops were used.

Taste: 2.5 – Sweet maltyness accentuated by the big alcohol, the hops cover the alcohol well, but its obviously noticeable. Piney bitterness. Fruity. Almost cloying really, and a little hot.

Mouthfeel/Palate: 2.5 – Slick, resiny, not much noticeable carbonation. The alcohol and the hop merge well.

Overall: 2.5 – This is good, but its not really a sipping style, and you cant drink a nearly 10% beer too fast. Interesting hop style, would love to try it in a lighter beer. This is really getting into Barleywine territory,
