Mash – Knitro Ryder – Red Rye Nitro IPA

Mash Brewing – Knitro Ryder Red Rye Nitro IPA, 2017, 6.8%ABV, 375ml can.

Drank on 8/12/2017, from I.B.S.

Appearance: 2.5 – BIG Nitro thick head that slow ly dropped to thick lacing.

Smell/Aroma: 3 – Caramel/Sugary roasted grain, hoppy smells.

Taste: 2.5 – Sweet malt and resinous hops, a rye sharp malt character. Caramel-like malts and a lemon tart aftertaste.

Mouthfeel/Palate: 2 – Not much, a slight slick hop resin-like after taste.

Overall: 3  – The nitro and head are fantastic, this is a standard red ale with a nice nitro pour.

Beers 4/3/17

La Sirene – Saison. Nice very funky smell on opening, cloudy, theres a fair bit of yeast floating around in this, its bottle conditioned. Lemony on the first sip, then a yeasty spice typical of a Saison.  Kinda dry finish, a little wine-like. The nice lemony taste grows. This is good.

Brasserie de Saint-Sylvestre – 3 Monts Bière de Flandre. Ok, this is a Bière de Garde (“beer for keeping”), its clear, looks like a lager, smells like a lager, its not a lager and its 8.5%. I have no idea about the age of this bottle or the condition its been kept in (was in a fridge when I purchased it) . There is a light malt flavour in there, a little woodyness (looks like this was fermented in wood barrels from online notes?) and some wine, though its rather obscured by the alcohol taste and the yeast until it warms up. This does need to warm up to show more than the alcohol/yeast. The yeast has a saison character, peppery etc. Its not a bad beer, but seems like a Saison with too much alcohol present and less carbonation and anything else is rather hidden, probably not kept well?. One glass is more than enough.

Oscar Blues – Ten Fidy. Imperial Stout. My god this is a dense and thick as hell head, it is dark brown as hell. 10.5% and malty, burnt, dark malt, burnt sugar, all kinds of dark, rich, thick, viscous. I dont get any coffee, or molasses, just malt. There is a hoppyness in there, you can kinda sense it, 98IBU. This is good. Damn good.

Boston Brewing – Nut Brown Ale. Ok, I drank this the other day, but didn’t review at the time and for some reason thought it was worth getting again to do so…must have been the next beer I’m about to drink, but this is good, this is not bad and no hate. This is a nut brown ale, simple and this does it. Its got good malt, a nice mineral character, the hops are subdued…its good. This is good, worth drinking again regardless.

Fox Hat Brewing – Phat Mongrel. A Oatmeal Stout. Ok as I said above/below I got a few beers I didnt review and maybe this was the one I wanted to. This is nice, its good, its almost viscous enough to say oatmeal, but yeah its also OK. roasty, very easy. Lovely malt smell, cant detect hops unless its in the aftertaste. This isnt bad, its good,  but no stand out.

Bootleg Brewery One Offs Barrel Aged Amber Ale.Has a bit of a musty smell, it tastes dead-hops bitter, maybe oxidized, like it may be quite old. Apart from the bitterness I think I can taste coconut which may be a residual of the vanilla flavour meant to be in here.

Bootleg Brewery One Offs Black Market Black IPA. Ok this is better, nice strong hoppyness, not too overbearing, nice dark malt flavour, not too roasty or burnt as can be common with this style. Good carbonation. Its black, opaque.

Mash Brewing Freo Doctor Lager. Had this on tap a few weeks back, cant say there is much difference between it and this bottled one, maybe a little funk?. Very Aussie lager, has a good “real” malty taste, compared to the mass produced stuff. Not overbearing, very sessional, Nice hoppy bitterness too. This is good.

Feral Brewing in CANS FINALLY

Warhog, Perth Local, Sly Fox

Sly Fox Summer Ale. This is, as always, a nice easy beer, cant notice too much difference between cans and bottles on this one. Its a slight bit more hoppier, maybe? the smell has a bit more range, maybe? Its very sessional, which is the point of a summer ale and I guess the cans here are more of a convenience factor.

Warhog American IPA. This is great, and as good from a can [a rather fresh new can] as when I have had it on tap. Smells fruity like passionfruit, has a lemony hop bitterness, obviously hop forward but still has a nice light malt that doesnt challenge the great hopping. Having this in cans for hop freshness and as a regular is a great idea.

Perth Local Lager. This is great. I think if distribution is good and its easy to get to it will probably be my regular [currently anything is my regular, but its mainly Coopers Sparkling or Pale Ale].Its a lager but unike most on the shelf here it has good real character. A nice hoppy interesting bitterness and a good mild yet flavorful malt taste.

Beer 3/9/16

Schofferhofer- Grapefruit Wheat Beer Radler

Petrus – Blond Belgian Pale Ale

Petrus – Dubbel Bruin

Sierra Nevada – Hop Hunter IPA

Sierra Nevada – Torpedo Extra IPA

The Grapefruit Radler was almost lollywater. 2.5 percent , extremely easy drinking, a light grapefruit bitterness and smell. Its a weird one, its not bad but…yeah. If you want a session grapefruit “drink” this may be it.

The Petrus Blond is a weird one, I was expecting something lighter. Its more amber, with a good caramel malty taste, a bit of alcohol present too. Candy malt/syrup I think is what does it? Nice moderate bitterness from hops. Smells “Belgian” if thats a thing, a good malty citrus aroma.

Petrus Dubbel Bruin has a lighter alcohol/candy thing taste than the Blond, and far less smell, still has a light nice fig, dried date, slightly spiced smell thing going on though. The taste is so so, though. Its there, then its gone. Malty, a short sharp hope of what you smell, but thats it.

The Hop Hunter, no idea when this was bottled, cant find a date stamp. I’ve had this before, its Hoppy, but unless its super fresh as hell can I really say how this is much better than many big IPA’s?  Still has that weird corner of the lip burn.

Torpedo…nothing to say, the beer that made me go FUCKING HELL and get into craft beer and know the potential of hops. Its still good.

Beer – 3/9/16 – Nail – Chocolate Brown Ale

Has a lot of dark malt bitterness, and a sourness to it I sometimes notice with darker beers. It could be considered watery but it is an Ale, not a Stout or something, and this doesnt come across as a problem as I drink this pint. Its very nice, I could have another where many darker beers one would be heavy, too strong, and enough.

Served at the Belgian Beer Cafe.

Beers – 1/9/16

Cheeky Monkey – Travelling Monk Session Red Ale

Schofferhofer – Hefeweizen

Badger Brewing – Tangle Foot English Pale Ale

The Cheeky Monkey has a really nice bitterness that I dont think is all hops, and Im guessing the chocolate wheat and golden naked oats somehow add to that. The other maybe the Bravo hops – meant to be spicy – but Im unsure if I have encountered them before.  Low alcohol [3.5 percent] and the nice bitterness make it very drinkable.

The Hefe was  nice, an initial banana smell and taste, a spicyness with a nice refreshing citrus afterwards, not too spicy, but its there. This was well prices and definitely a beer I will buy again for casual drinking.

The Tangle Foot has a very nice sweet malty taste to it, caramel like, reminds me of chewing on some caraamber malt. Light fruity smell. It has a fair amount of  bitterness to it, not too much, which is good with the lower carbonation. Its rather abrupt in taste, you sip it, taste it all and then it ends with a slight bitterness and sweetness left, no real lingering aftertaste. Its not bad.

Beers 13/8/16

Mornington Peninsula Brewing – Dogs Bollocks Nitro English Special Bitter

Anderson Valley – Briney Melon Gose

Timothy Taylor – Landlord Pale Ale

Shepherd Neam – India Pale Ale

CUB – Melbourne Bitter

Adnams – Ghost Ship  Pale Ale

Had a Dogs Bollocks and a Melon Gose still around. Still loving that nitro carbonation.

The Landlord Pale ale was good, same for the Shepherd Neam IPA and the Adnams Pale Ale. Been reading Shut Up About Barkley Perkins a lot.

Melbourne Bitter is better than VB and Export.

Also had a 4 Pines Kolsch, a Founders All Day IPA and a Tooheys Old.

Beers 12/8/16

Sierra Nevada – Hoptimum IPA

Founders – Mosaic Promise Single Hop Ale

Mornington Peninsula Brewing – Dogs Bollocks Nitro English Special Bitter

Anderson Valley – Briney Melon Gose

Been over IPA’s for forever now, no Idea why I still buy them. Hoptimum was peppery, very hop bitter.

Mosaic Promise wasnt bad, but I didnt get a sense of Mosaic, unless its a standard Founders hop and then its just a common hop taste…
