Eagle Bay/Mane Liquor/Whippersnapper – Black Vanilla

Eagle Bay/Mane Liquor/Whippersnapper – Black Vanilla Whiskey Barrel Aged Vanilla Coconut Imperial Porter, 2017, 9.5%ABV, 640ml bottle

A colab between Eagle Bay Brewing, Mane Liquor Store and Whippersnapper Distillery. Bottled on 15/7/17

Drank on 18/12/17 from Copper & Oak

Appearance: 2.5 – Black, viscous, a nice big thick brown head that gives nice lacing.

Smell/Aroma: 3 – Coffee, vanilla, rich but sweet, syrupy alcohols, port wine, some cocoa.

Taste: 4 – Coffee, very big on the coffee, dark maltyness, rich malt, dark malt and coffee bitterness,. There is a transition from the richness, the dark malts into is a nice balanced hoppy bitterness that then blends very nicely into the slight Whiskey after-notes and a dry oak red wine character. No coconut I could detect. Possibly vanilla.

Mouthfeel/Palate: 3 – This is rounded, big, and finishes quite dry. Big rich, not viscous but the combined bitterness characters and the oaky dryness definitely sticks around.

Overall: 3.5 – This is good, a nice big slow sipper. There is no coconut, not really any vanilla, but thats probably the 5 months its sat in unknown condition. This is very nice, regardless.

UPDATE 21/12/17 – I recapped this bottle (with a proper bottle capper, and then fridged) after drinking slightly less than half. Going back to it now, I’m smelling dry fruits, port wine, fig, rich fruit cake, red wine barrel. On tasting its less carbonated obviously, but theres a big oak dryness initially, some hop bitterness, then a rich dry fruit, a dry red wine, slightly tart, some almost port character and then into an big oak bitterness and some alcohol. Not as much hop bitterness. Not too bad but obviously not in the best state.

Beers – 14/9/16

Oskar Blues – Hotbox Coffee Porter. This was good but may have to get another as I dont remember too much about it [writing this weeks later…]. I do remember it was dark, malty, coffee in a very raw way.

Mornington Peninsula – Nitro Sacchariferous Stout. This is Tinnage 006. A really nice milk stout with that great nitro carbonation.Little bit sweet, nice malt bitterness and a dark thick head.

Nail – Huge Dunn Imperial Brown Ale. Good and probably reviewed elsewhere on here.

Beers 20/8/16

Tennents – Export Original Larger

Brains – Black Welsh Stout

Both of these were good. The larger has a maltyness I dont want to say sweet but, sweeter than a usual larger. A definite lagered yeast flavour, if thats a thing – not a funk but something like that.

The stout was nice and malty, again it has taste to it that wasnt crazy strange but had a different maltyness for a dark malt than I can pin on other beers of this style.

Beers 5/8/16

Mornington Peninsula Brewing – Dogs Bollocks Nitro English Special Bitter

Boatrocker Brewery – Saison du Bateau

4 Pines – Keller Door: Double Cascadian Dark Ale

Cheeky Monkey – Silver Back Russian Imperial Stout

All good beers, the standout was the Nitro carbonated ESB. Really, really great carbonation.

Beers 15/7/16

A bunch of regular “go-to’s”, and one very local beer.

The Hefe and Dunkel are both awesome beers. What else can be said about Weihenstephaner.

The Sail and Anchor Amber Ale was really damn good. Fresh, malty, slightly sweet, light bitterness, the grain really present. Very nice.

And two regulars: Coopers Best Extra Stout is just a good stout. Bitter, roasty grain, but not too sharp, a nice dark beer. The Guinness Extra Stout seems to be everywhere right now and is also very good. Similar to the Coopers stout in many ways, but it has a slight sour note to it, which I really like.

Cabbages & Kings, Imperial Oyster and Horopito Stout. 12% 650ml.

This is intense, the alcohol is very apparent, the mouthfeel is viscous and rich, the taste is intense dark malt, dark chocolate, and a hint of smoke, peppery – Horopito is a native NZ pepper plant -, a little briny.

A review I made later in the night:

It was very damn good, a sipper, very intense, viscous, rich, peppery, a bit smokey and briny. I drank it over about 2 and a bit hours. 650ml. Only thing similar I have had has been barleywines. This was also about a year old – June 2015 i think was the last batch made – so had aged a bit and rounded out, which is a good thing, even preferable, for any dark strong style beer, which are, obviously, more malt forward.
